Charles R. Sherburne

June 26, 1925 — October 6, 2013

Charles Raymond Sherburne, age 88, passed away on October 6, 2013, in Appleton, NY, due to congestive heart failure. Charles was born on June 26, 1925, in Weyauwega, WI, to John and Rose (Perch) Sherburne. The oldest of three children he graduated from Weyauwega High School in 1942. In 1949, Charles graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY, with an engineering degree. After his sailing career, other jobs included engineering positions at A/C Spark Plug, General Electric, Kimberly Clark and Case IH. During those years he also participated in a Sports Car Club, driving in many rallies. In 1969, Charles became the first Zoning Administrator for Waupaca County. He was an alderman for 6 years in the City of Weyauwega and also worked in the Public Works Department there. On July 21, 1972, he married Joyce Dalrymple. Shortly after, they moved to Titusville, Florida, where Charles was employed by Morton Thiokol as Chief Engineer on the NASA ship Liberty Star, which was used to recover the solid rocket boosters from the Space Shuttles. Charles retired from Morton Thiokol in 1992. His ship, the Liberty Star, is now stationed at Kings Point Marine Academy as a training vessel. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Thomas R. and Helen Sherburne and sister, Dorothy R. Sherburne. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joyce Sherburne, stepsons David and Dennis Dalrymple, 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 4 nieces and nephews and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews. A Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Cline-Hanson-Dahlke Funeral Home in Weyauwega. Gathering will start at 11 AM with the service at 11:30 AM. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery.
