Gordon "Gordy" H. Carew, age 99, of Manawa, died on Monday, April 24, 2023 at Manawa Community Nursing Center. He was born on October 8, 1923 in the Town of Little Wolf (Bear Lake), the son of the late Edward and Julia Carew. He lived all his life on his Bear Lake property.
Gordy graduated from Manawa High School in 1941 and was a life-long member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manawa. He served as trustee for a number of years and was an usher for 50 years. On May 5, 1956 he was united in marriage to Virginia Fose of Appleton. Virginia passed away on October 2, 1985. On January 6, 1988, he married Mildred Wandtke, and she preceded him in death on May 2, 2014.
Gordy had a number of places of employment in his early life. In 1953, Gordy and Chauncey Walker formed a partnership as distributors of farm equipment for Badger Northland. In 1957, Carew and Walker started Barn-o-matic, Inc., a manufacturer of farm equipment. In 1962, the business had grown and several companies were interested in purchasing Barn-o-matic, so Gordy and Walker sold out and retired. In 1963, Gordy joined a number of New London business people in starting a new national bank. He was an organizer / director and first President of New London National Bank. In 1968, Gordy and Virginia started Midwest Sports Corp., a distributor of snowmobile parts and accessories. They continued this venture until 1984 when Virginia's health declined. He continued to be active in retirement, taking care of his 13-acre yard and enjoyed an occasional golf game, hitting a hole in one at age 86.
Gordy is survived by his nephews: Thomas (Sue) Carew, William (Sally) Carew, David (Jennifer) Carew, Pat (Karen) Carew, Paul Carew and special friend Yoko Gates; nieces: Salli (Brian) Bunno, Mary (Brian) Whitemarsh, Ruth (Dan) Boerst, Joan (Tim) Sweet, Sandra (Robin) Dunnihoo; stepson: Denny Wandtke.
Besides his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by his brothers and spouses: John (Rebecca) Carew, Michael (Barbara) Carew and Donald (Rita) Carew; nephews: James Carew, John B. Carew; Millie's daughter Peggy Lee.
The Funeral Mass for Gordy will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manawa with Fr. Matthew Rappl officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:00 - 10:45 am. Friends may visit www.dahlkefh.com to share memories and condolences with Gordy's family.
